Description
A surgical operation at St. Louis Children's Hospital, located at Jefferson Avenue and Adams Street, in 1911. From left to right, unidentified operating room nurse; Dr. Charles A. Stone (back to camera); Dr. Nathaniel Allison; Dr. James Archer O'Reilly; Ruth Riley; and unidentified anesthetist. Ruth Riley, a 1909 graduate of the Washington University Training School for Nurses, was the hospital's first superintendent, a professional administrator overseeing the nurses and day-to-day operation of the hospital.
