Description
Celebration in front of Barnes Hospital for Base Hospital 21 on May 7, 1917. The Department of Military Relief of the American Red Cross organized a number of base hospitals as a result of a plan developed in 1916 by the American Red Cross and the War Department. These units were developed from existing civil institutions (universities and hospitals) so that if the need for such units should arise (i.e., the United States should enter the war), there would be fully equipped hospital units complete with physicians, nurses, and supplies ready for active service. In St. Louis the Red Cross raised $60,000 for beds, blankets, instruments, medicines, portable laboratory and kitchen equipment, ambulances, etc. for the Washington University unit, Base Hospital 21. On April 7, 1917 the United States declared war on Germany. Less than six weeks later, Base Hospital 21 left for service overseas.
