Description
Scene of a 15-bed ward at Ravenel Hospital, Mirecourt, France. Capt. Robert Peck is seated on a bed speaking to a patient. The litter-bearers are German POWs. The 21st General Hospital utilized French civilian workers, German POWs, and Italian sanitary corps workers to help staff the hospital wards, so ward duty lists were posted in English, French, German, and Italian. The nurses also devised a system of colored ribbons tied to the ends of beds to indicate to the non-English speaking workers the type of care to be given patients (e.g. complete bed rest, latrine privileges, penicillin). Photograph was taken in January 1945.
