Description
Several of the medical officers of the 21st General Hospital sailed on October 27, 1945 from Marseilles, France on the S. S. Westminster Victory. Capt. John W. Dix was the assigned surgeon for the sick bay. For the first several days of the journey, the only illness treated was seasickness. However, on the 7th day of the voyage, stormy seas caused heavy iron and wooden beams to break loose in the aft hold, killing two men and injuring more than a dozen others. The rescue work was led by Col. Lee D. Cady, Col. Karl H. Metz, Lt. Col. Earl E. Shepard, and Capt. Dix. All received the Army Commendation Ribbon for their heroic actions.
